Science

Aim: To know what makes something a living thing.

Have a look at the video to find out what features living things have. There is a poster to use if you don’t have internet access. Then have a go at sorting the living things. You can print out and cut and stick the images. Or you can write the two headings in your books and draw some living things and some non-living things. Make sure you put on lots of different examples.

Make sure you are reading your bug club books regularly.

I would expect 2 or three over the week as we would have done over the week at school.

Just a reminder: you only need to complete one phonics and one maths task per day. Some have completed the whole weeks worth already! Please use the grid on the second page of the home learning document to help you.

Thanks

RE

Aim: to listen to two Buddhist stories

All religions have words and stories that are special to them. Last week we learned a story that is special to Christians and this week we are focusing on the religion of Buddhists.

Please listen to the two special Buddhist stories in the video below:

In your learning journal can you write a sentence to explain which story was your favourite and why?

  • Was it the story of Siddhartha rescuing the hurt swan or the story about the monkey king?

Both these stories give out clear messages about being kind to other animals. Buddhists think we should be kind to all living things.

Could you do anything to show kindness to animals around you today? You could give your pet some attention or put out some food for the creatures that visit your garden. If it’s really cold and icy you could help animals by filling a birdbath or drinking bowl in the garden and helping to keep it ice-free.

Aim: To Create a plot matrix to develop story ideas

Have a look at the pictures of a plot matrix on the video; this is just a fancy word for planning out our ideas for the story before mapping them.

Have a look at the choices shown and create your own plot matrix. Our story is going to continue to look at mood too. Draw the grid like mine in your book and fill it in.

The Learning for your story needs to be the same as mine. It’s the main thing your story will be about.

History

Aim: to understand how and why things were different in the past using the example of Grace Darling

Please watch to this YouTube clip, it tells us about Grace’s heroic story:

The Story of Grace Darling | Primary History | BBC Teach

We have been learning about the RNLI and the impressive lifeboats used to save people at sea. Grace Darling saved these sailors at sea over 180 years ago. What might have been different in the past?

Could you map out the main events on Grace Darling’s story in you isolation book.

You could start by drawing the light house where she and her family lived.

More information on Grace Darling can be found here:

Use the document below to help you check the activities for your year group, you can tick them off when they are completed each day to help you see your accomplishments.

Aim: to listen to a parable and explain its special message

Different religions have different words and stories that are important to them. Today we thinking about Christians and a book which is special to them, called the bible. The bible contains many special stories including The Parable of the lost sheep. Please watch the youtube story

Now you could act out this story with siblings, toys or teddies.

This story has a special message, called a moral, to be learned.  What do you think the special message (moral) is?

Could you write a sentence explaining what you think the moral of the story is, into your isolation book?

Primary Year D Quarter 1 Episode 5: "Lost and Found"

Jesus comes looking for me when I am far from Him. " 'Your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost' "(Matthew 18:14, NIV).

Aim: To use the copy and paste function to create a poster

We are going to look at our local RNLI centre and create an informative poster. We will find images and use the copy and paste tools to make a poster. With help we can insert text, changing the size and colour if possible.

Look up our local centre here

Aim: To consider what is involved in keeping a real pet happy and healthy

First we need to think about which animals might make good pets?

You could try and think of 4 animals that would make good pets from the animal groups listed below:

A mammal:
A fish:

A reptile:

Now can you chose one of these animals and think about what they would need to stay healthy?

You can draw or make this animal using and junk modelling materials around your house.

  • Watch the work being created by Tony Plant

Art ~ Looking at Tony Plant.

Aim: To create a piece of artwork

Watch him make the artwork and it disappear. This is transient art~it’s only there for a short time. This week we are going to make our own transient art. If you can get to the beach great, but we can do it by using sticks/leaves or other found objects(no pulling things off!)

On the first Lockdown my daughter and I went for daily walks and we loved seeing children’s chalked messages on the way. Some were rainbows or messages of support for the NHS. You could do the same sort of thing or maybe a different message like : be kind, make space or one of your own.

This art is temporary so take a photo and please send it in so I can enjoy it too.

Watch the clip then try the activities.

We want you to set a PB=personal best. So you'll need to time yourself, then try it again see if you can do it faster or do more like with the shuttle relay. Or try to go further!

Use whatever you can for cones, cushions if you have some or space inside. If you are outside you can come up with different markers. Just make sure you are careful and warm up too. It's chilly outside so wrap up. Remember to have layers so once you get hot working out then you can take some off. If you stop though do wrap up warm again.

Bug club levels have been reset for all children.

Please go on and check that they are not too easy, ie. no difficulty at all. They need it to be a bit of a challenge! Or too hard, ie. struggling with every sound/word.

If the level isn't suiting you then please let me know and I can adjust it accordingly.

Thanks

[Verse 1]
We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below
Are sleeping as we fly
I'm holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly
So high above with you

[Verse 2]
Far across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills
The forests and the streams

[Bridge]

Children gaze open-mouthed
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below
Believes their eyes

[Verse 3]
We're surfing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy
Mountains floating by

[Bridge]
Suddenly swooping low
On an ocean deep
Rousing up a mighty monster
From his sleep

[Verse 4]
We're walking in the air
We're dancing in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us
Greets us as we fly

Year 2 will be receiving a letter via email about Times Tables rockstars. This is an online platform so that they can practice their times tables.

They will need to complete the studio sessions over 10 times for it to learn their ability,  then the questions will be aimed at helping them improve based on their current knowledge. Please support them to have a go and keep trying during this phase as it is a challenge.... rest assured it should get easier! Honest.

Spellings for this week are on the sheet below.

There won't be a spelling test at the moment, please practice reading and trying to spell these with your child. They could write you some sentences using the words too.

The words we are learning are the common exception words for each year group. Here is an explanation of what these are:-

Common exception words are words in which the English Spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way. They are not words for which phonics 'doesn't work', but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a rare or unique way.
